On Friday, December 9th, 2016, Dr Pepper Snapple Group/Grupo Peñafiel and KaBOOM! partnered with the Municipio de Tecámac to build a great new play space in Tecámac, Mexico at the Deportivo Sierra Hermosa recreation center. The project was the final Let’s Play playground build in 2016!
Municipio Tecámac takes pride in its public works programming and the Deportivo Sierra Hermosa recreation complex serves more 1,000 kids a year. The surrounding community is very diverse and the children who live there have limited options for active play, making the new playground a critical additional to the neighborhood.
At approximately 9:00 A.M., more than 350 volunteers, including 46 from Grupo Peñafiel, gathered in front of what would become their new play space. The volunteers were so enthusiastic for this project that more than 200 people showed up an hour early for the build! They were cheered on by eager children who were excited to see their playground dreams become reality. Everyone was welcomed by Jesus Adair Contreras, Director of Public Works for Tecámac, and Mauricio Araujo, Director of Tecámac Plant for Grupo Peñafiel to kick off the special day. After a safety and logistics briefing, the volunteers were ready to work!
Under the trained eye of the KaBOOM! Project Managers and a professional playground installer, volunteers installed a large playground structure including several climbers, a rock wall, a triple slide, swings, a spinning cup and a zip line. To keep the children safe, they also installed 85 cubic yards of sand, the traditional playground surfacing in Mexico. Due to delivery issues leading up to the build, the sand arrived on Build Day and volunteers helped transport the loose sand from the truck to the structure. To help enhance the site, volunteers also built large wooden shade structures, benches with trellis sides and planters built in, plus other unique planters. While all of the volunteer activity was going on, the children were in their own areas coloring, playing games and making a paper chain for ribbon cutting. They were very excited to see all of the volunteers’ hard work!
As the day came to a close, all of the volunteers came together to clean up the site in preparation for the ribbon cutting ceremony at 3:30 PM. Several special guests shared closing remarks including Jesus Adair Contreras, Mauricio Araujo, President of the Municipal DIF System Lili Urbina Salazar, and Federal Deputy, District 28Rocio Díaz Montoya. They were joined by Municpio de Tecámac Director of Social Development and Municpio de Tecámac Director of Integral Family Development Oscar Magos Dias. A large cheer could be heard throughout the neighborhood as the ribbon was cut and everyone celebrated a great day of hard work!
Planning for this project was led by Liliana Pedroza with Atzimba Romero.
