Revitalizing Play in Greensburg

Greensburg community members gathered recently at the Sprint Street Playground & Park to build a new playground, in one of many steps the city is taking to revitalize the area.

On May 12, 2012, 40 residents spread wood chips, installed benches and trash cans and built a brand-new play space. Area Boy Scouts refreshed the basketball court, mounting a new hoop and repainting the court. The new playground will serve almost 4,600 people who live within walking distance of the park.

One of the youngest community members at the build said of the playground, “It’s nice for us, and it’s fun to play.”

The Spring Street Playground Improvement Project led the playground build. The group was awarded a $15,000 Let’s Play Community Construction grant and a $25,000 local match to the grant.

As Greensburg adults continue to refresh the community and think about the next neighborhood park they can spruce up, the children of Greenburg are looking to the future as well. In fact, the Boy Scouts already have plans to paint a 4-square court and hopscotch game area!

For now though, all the children are excited to simply PLAY.
